Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

I am travelling on the world famous West Highland line to Oban - how far are you from Oban station?

We are less than 3 miles from the station and easily accessible by taxi (there is a taxi rank immediately outside the station). However, to get the most out of our beautiful area you would benefit from hiring a car.

Will you send travel directions of how to find Cologin?

We use Microsoft's Autoroute to provide step by step directions from your home address to Oban and these are sent to you with your check in details on receipt of your final balance payment. To find us from Oban simply take the A816 heading south towards Lochgilphead and turn right to Lerags about 2 miles from the town centre. Follow the single track Lerags road into the Glen for about ½ mile and turn right again into Cologin. We are just a few minutes drive from the town centre but our location is wonderfully rural and very peaceful.

Our group will have more than one car - will that be a problem?

There is adjacent parking for at least one car and depending on size you might be able to double park two cars in your allocated space. We have an overflow car park for trailers and extra cars within a short walk of most of our properties so parking is not a problem. Please do not park on our grass!

Do we need to bring one pound coins for the meter?

No, your meter will have been read for your arrival and all you have to do is take a final meter reading on departure. The difference between the outgoing reading and the incoming reading will give you the number of units used. We charge 10p per unit which is the standard local electricity board rate including VAT at 5% and equipment rental. The cost will vary depending on the time of year, but as a rough guide allow £5 - £15 for the Inner Hebridean lodge and £5 - £10 for the Outer Hebridean chalet per week from May to September.

I'm travelling from abroad and won't have room for towels - can you provide them?

We can hire towels at £2.50 per set per week. A set consists of a hand towel and a bath towel - please book your towels using the booking form.

I have twin babies and will need two cots in our bedroom - is this possible?

All our Inner Hebridean lodges can accommodate one cot per bedroom and our disabled access lodges (being slightly larger to allow wheelchair access) will be fine for two cots in either bedroom. Don't forget to bring your own cot linen.

How child-friendly is Cologin?

The Barn is a family friendly pub and restaurant and holds a full 'Children's Licence'. This allows children under the age of 14 (accompanied by their parents) to visit the Barn until 8.00pm. The Barn offers a children's menu and half portions from the blackboard menu. Parents should note that the playpark is close to the Barn and we are used to youngsters being 'summoned for tea' through the patio doors. We also provide cots and high chairs free of charge (please bring your own cot linen) and all our accommodation has microwaves so you can warm bottles and baby food as you wish. The playpark with wooden climbing frame, swings and slide, is within easy reach of all our properties and is close to the Barn. It has a bark surface and is fenced from the carpark and duck pond. We put a ping pong table in one of the farm barns for use during the summer but most kids make friends with neighbouring families and make their own fun!

Is there mobile phone reception in the area?

Depending on the network there is sketchy mobile phone reception in our Glen. Most networks are picked up in Oban, but Vodaphone works best at Cologin. We have two public phone boxes on site and the Barn bar will always take a message for guests.

What if I have to cancel my holiday?

Cancellation can result in a financial loss if we are unable to relet your holiday property. However, there is an optional subscription to our Cancellation Protection Plan (see Cancellation Protection Plan for full details) which covers the most usual reasons for cancellation. Before booking please read all our booking terms and conditions and decide if you wish to join our cancellation plan or to arrange your own holiday insurance.

Do you allow smoking at Cologin?

Following recent Scottish anti-smoking legislation all accommodation at Cologin is non smoking. The Barn - our country pub on site - is also now a smoke free zone but you can still smoke outside! Please dispose of all cigarette stubbs carefully.

We have two large dogs and we are a bit worried about the animals on your farm - will our pets still be welcome?

We are extremely dog friendly and welcome up to two pets (charges apply) in our Inner Hebridean lodges. However, pet owners must ensure that their dogs do not foul the site. We also ask pet owners to keep dogs on a lead not just to protect our ducks and chickens (who are more often chased by toddlers than terriers) but as a courtesy to other dog owners and to those who may be wary of strange dogs. Don't forget we've 17,000 acres in the hills above Cologin with waymarked forest trails where your dogs can have a really good run off the lead.

I'm a pensioner - do you give discounts?

We are delighted to offer senior citizens a generous 10% discount and no charge for pets. We also offer a £20 discount for two people booking a two bedroom lodge. A £50 discount for the second week of a two week let and a 10% discount for all our return customers. All our discounts are restricted to full week lets and exclude the peak season.

Full details of our discounts can be found on our Tariff page.

Do you have Internet Access at Cologin?

We offer a BT Wi-Fi 'OpenZone' at Cologin. Vouchers can be purchased online via our website by clicking here or on site at the Barn bar, so as long as you have a wi-fi enabled laptop, PDA or mobile phone then you can log on and check your emails or surf the web as you please.

"The chalet was ideal with everything required for a very comfortable stay, the only wrong thing about the stay was it was not long enough! The staff at the Barn were all very friendly and they contributed a lot to our enjoyment. The scenery and fishing were first class. We hope to return some time in the near future for a longer stay."
Mr and Mrs Muldonwnie, Alloa.
